This hilltop fortress overlooking the city and harbor was built in the fourteenth century by the Nasrid rulers to protect the older Alcazaba palace below, to which it is connected by a fortified corridor. Its ramparts wind around the summit, offering sweeping views over the port, the bullring, and the Mediterranean coast. The castle withstood a lengthy siege before the city fell to Christian forces in the late fifteenth century. A small interpretive center recounts its military history within the thick defensive walls.
