This historic square in the old town occupies the site of the ancient Roman forum and is flanked by the cathedral, its bell tower, and the basilica of the city's patron. At its center a reclining fountain represents the river and the irrigation channels of the surrounding fertile plain. The traditional water court, an ancient tribunal settling irrigation disputes, still convenes weekly at the cathedral's Gothic doorway. Cafes ring the pedestrian space, making it a favored gathering point in the heart of the city.
