This large Baroque church stands on the site of the city's principal mosque, of which fragments including a patio of orange trees and part of the minaret's base survive. Built mainly in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries after the earlier structure collapsed, it is the second largest church in the city after the cathedral. Inside, towering gilded altarpieces and carved wooden sculptures reflect the height of Sevillian devotional art. Its warm sandstone facade dominates one of the busiest squares in the old town.
