This exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle guards the narrow entrance to the historic centre of Sirmione, on a slender peninsula reaching into Lake Garda. Built by the Scaliger lords of Verona in the 13th century, it is surrounded almost entirely by water, and its ramparts enclose a rare fortified harbour once used to shelter the lake fleet. Swallow-tailed battlements crown the walls and a tall central keep, which visitors can climb for views over the lake and old town.
