On the slopes of Fourvière hill lie the excavated remains of the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum, including a large theatre and a smaller odeon cut into the hillside. Dating to the first century, these tiered stone semicircles once hosted drama and music for the Roman provincial capital of Gaul. Today the ruins still stage summer performances during a long-running arts festival, with audiences seated on the original terraces. An adjacent museum displays mosaics, inscriptions, and everyday objects unearthed from the site.
