Hidden in the Latin Quarter, these are the remains of a Roman amphitheatre from the ancient city of Lutetia, one of the few Gallo-Roman monuments surviving in Paris. Built in the first century, the arena could seat thousands for gladiatorial combats and theatrical performances, and traces of its tiered seating and stage niches endure. Rediscovered during 19th-century construction, the site was saved after a public campaign led by writers including Victor Hugo. Today it is a quiet garden where children play football.
