At the foot of the boulevard Saint-Michel where it meets the Seine, this monumental wall fountain forms a dramatic backdrop to a busy Left Bank crossroads. Built during the Haussmann era in the 1860s, it depicts the Archangel Michael triumphing over the devil, flanked by dragons spouting water and coloured marble columns. The towering composition was designed to close a vista created by the new boulevards. A popular meeting point for students and travellers, it anchors the entrance to the Latin Quarter.
