This red-painted lighthouse marks the end of the Great South Wall, a long stone breakwater reaching far into Dublin Bay. First lit in the 1760s and later rebuilt, it guided shipping into the mouth of the Liffey during the port's expansion. The wall leading to it was for a time one of the longest sea walls in the world, and a walk along its granite blocks offers sweeping views of the bay, the city and the Wicklow Mountains beyond. It has become a favourite spot for walkers and photographers.
