Palmeral of Elche

More than two hundred thousand date palms shade Elche — a piece of North Africa on the Spanish Mediterranean. Date cultivation here goes back to Iberian times around the fifth century BCE, but the formal palm groves with their elaborate irrigation channels were laid out under Muslim rule in the late tenth century CE, a rare survival of Arab oasis agriculture on European soil. UNESCO inscribed the Palmeral in 2000.
