Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco

Rome governed its Iberian provinces from Tarraco, seat of the imperial cult and a flourishing administrative and trading city. Modern Tarragona sits directly on top of it, which makes the archaeology tantalising: an amphitheatre by the sea, stretches of wall, and fragments of forum, circus and temples preserved beneath later streets, revealed by exceptional excavations. The grandeur of the provincial capital still shows through. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble in 2000.
