Historic Walled Town of Cuenca

Houses hang over the void at Cuenca — the celebrated casas colgadas jut from cliffs above the Huécar gorge, emblem of a medieval fortress city the Moors sited superbly within the defences of the Caliphate of Córdoba. Castilian conquest in the 12th century brought royal favour, a bishopric and Spain's earliest Gothic cathedral. The walled town still towers over ravines and countryside. UNESCO inscribed Cuenca in 1996.
