Cistercian monks raised Poblet in the hills of Catalonia into one of Spain's largest abbeys, austere and fortress-like around a 12th-century church. Kings of the Crown of Aragon chose it as their pantheon, and a fortified royal residence grew within the walls — an unusual meeting of cloister and court. Still home to a monastic community, Poblet was inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage in 1991.
