Human Rights, Liberation and Reconciliation: Nelson Mandela Legacy Sites

Fourteen places across South Africa together tell the 20th-century struggle against apartheid and the long road to reconciliation. They range from the Union Buildings in Pretoria, today the seat of government, to Sharpeville, where 69 protesters against the Pass Laws were killed in 1960, and the Great Place at Mqhekezweni, where the young Nelson Mandela absorbed traditional leadership. Rooted in non-racialism, Pan-Africanism and ubuntu, the serial property joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024.
