The red dunes of the Kalahari along South Africa's border with Botswana and Namibia hold the story of the ǂKhomani San, descendants of the region's first peoples. Across this expanse of sand — overlapping the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park — evidence of human presence runs from the Stone Age right up to today, and the formerly nomadic San evolved deep ethnobotanical knowledge and a worldview keyed to the desert's features. UNESCO inscribed the cultural landscape in 2017.
