Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape

In the mountain desert along the Orange River in South Africa's far northwest, the Nama still follow the seasons with their flocks — a semi-nomadic pastoral life thought to stretch back as much as two thousand years in southern Africa. This is the last place where they build the portable rush-mat house known as the haru om, moving between grazing grounds and stock posts across 160,000 communally owned hectares. UNESCO inscribed the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape in 2007.
