Eureka is a coastal city on Humboldt Bay in far northern California, notable for its Victorian architecture concentrated in the Old Town district, particularly the elaborately ornamented Carson Mansion of 1886. The city serves as the main gateway to the Humboldt Redwoods and Avenue of the Giants, where some of the tallest trees on Earth grow along the South Fork Eel River. Humboldt Bay is one of California's most significant coastal wetlands, supporting large populations of migratory waterfowl.
