Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve north of San Diego protects the most restricted native range of the Torrey pine, a rare five-needled species growing only here and on Santa Rosa Island. Eroded sandstone bluffs form dramatic golden-colored cliffs above a remote beach at the foot of the reserve's trail system. The cliffside High Point overlook provides views along the San Diego coast to the Torrey Pines Mesa and, on clear days, the Coronado Islands in Mexico.
