Lassen Volcanic National Park in northeastern California is centered on Lassen Peak, a plug dome volcano that last erupted between 1914 and 1917, and is one of the few places in the lower 48 states where all four types of volcanoes are represented. The hydrothermal features of Bumpass Hell form the largest volcanic thermal area in the park, with boiling mud pots and fumaroles reminiscent of Yellowstone. The park's comparative isolation keeps visitor numbers well below those of better-known California parks.
