A Society Island sometimes called the Garden of Eden of French Polynesia, Huahine consists of two connected volcanic islands — Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti — divided by a narrow channel. The island retains several large marae ceremonial platforms, including Maeva village's stone temples which are among the best-preserved archaeological sites in French Polynesia. The shallow lagoon shelters populations of large sacred blue-eyed eels revered in local tradition.
