The largest atoll in French Polynesia and one of the largest in the world, Rangiroa consists of a narrow strip of motu encircling a vast lagoon that is so large it contains its own weather system and can appear from above as an inland sea. The Tiputa Pass is world-famous for drift dives where hammerhead sharks, dolphins, and grey reef sharks ride strong tidal currents. The lagoon is also used for pearl cultivation and hosts an inland sea known as the Blue Lagoon.
