Taal Volcano sits on Volcano Island within Taal Lake, itself occupying a large caldera in Batangas province south of Manila, making it one of the few instances of a lake on an island within a lake on an island. The active crater of Taal, one of the most dangerous in the world despite its modest elevation of 311 metres, last erupted significantly in January 2020, depositing ash across a wide radius. The most photographed perspective places Taal Lake in the foreground from the ridge town of Tagaytay, 22 kilometres to the north.
