The Mekong River forms the northern and northeastern boundary of Thailand with Laos for roughly 800 kilometres, with the riverfront town of Nong Khai serving as the most accessible crossing point. The stretch from Chiang Saen in the north through Chiang Khong and Nong Khai to Nakhon Phanom in the south offers varied river landscapes, fishing villages, and Buddhist temples overlooking the water. Sunset views across the river toward the Laotian bank are a recurring photographic motif. The river is navigated by slow boats between certain towns.
