A maar crater formed by a phreatomagmatic volcanic explosion estimated to be around 30,000 years old, Al Wahbah sits in the Hejaz volcanic field and measures approximately 250 metres deep and two kilometres in diameter. The crater floor is covered in bright white sodium phosphate crystals forming an otherworldly salt flat at the base of steep dark basaltic walls. The rim is accessible by road and the descent to the floor via a narrow trail, which takes around two hours round trip.
