An Etruscan and later Roman hill settlement 8 kilometres northeast of Florence, Fiesole retains a Roman amphitheatre, thermal baths, and temple foundations within its archaeological zone. The town's main square, with its Romanesque cathedral and bishop's palace, sits at 295 metres, high enough above the Mugnone valley to capture wide views of the Florentine basin. The winding road up from Florence passes through gardens and olive groves.
