Playa de Sotavento stretches for approximately 30 kilometres along the southeastern coast of Fuerteventura, forming part of the Jandía Natural Park and one of the longest and least-developed beach fronts in the Canary Islands. At low tide, a tidal lagoon forms between the outer sandbar and the shore, producing ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing that have made it the venue for international competitions since the 1980s. The pale sand and shallow turquoise lagoon water extend visually to the horizon in the clear Canarian light.
