The Côte d'Or — a narrow strip of limestone escarpment between Dijon and Santenay — produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines regarded as among the world's finest, in parcels called lieux-dits subdivided to a level of specificity unmatched in any other wine region. The Hospices de Beaune, a fifteenth-century hospital complex converted to a wine auction house, is the architectural centrepiece of the region's cultural identity. The terraced Lavaux-style vineyards above villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny are best photographed in October when the foliage turns gold.
