The principal settlement of the Camargue, a whitewashed village on the delta coast whose fortified Romanesque church contains the relics venerated by the Romani people as Sara-la-Kali. The annual Romani pilgrimage in May fills the village and surrounding wetlands. The surrounding lagoons support flamingo flocks, white egrets, and Camargue horses, making the area around the étangs south of the village productive for wildlife photography at dawn.
