A compact Basque fishing port with a sheltered sandy bay, red-and-white half-timbered architecture, and strong traditional identity just south of Biarritz near the Spanish border. The town's harbour played a major role in the historic Basque whale and cod fishing industry, and its market retains a strong local produce culture. Louis XIV was married in the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste here in 1660, the ceremony marking the end of the Thirty Years War.
