A resort town on the Basque Atlantic coast that became fashionable among European royalty in the nineteenth century, its Belle Époque villas and casino architecture complemented by powerful Atlantic surf on the Grand Plage and nearby Côte des Basques. Biarritz is the historic centre of European surfing, with the Côte des Basques beach first surfed in 1957 by the American Peter Viertel. The Rocher de la Vierge — a sea stack connected to the cliff by an iron footbridge — is the most recognisable coastal landmark.
