A medieval fortified hill town in the Ain département, one of the most intact examples of a medieval bastide in France, with its cobblestone streets and fourteenth-century ramparts still enclosing the entire settlement. The Place de la Halle at its centre retains its central linden tree and medieval well, and has served as a film set for period productions. The galette de Pérouges, a flat sugared bread made in the town's single bakery, is a regional culinary speciality.
