A complex of Palaeolithic caves at Montignac in the Vézère valley containing some of the most sophisticated prehistoric painted imagery in the world, estimated at approximately 17,000 years old. The original cave has been closed since 1963 to prevent deterioration, but the Lascaux IV international cave art centre opened in 2016 with a full facsimile reproduction using digital scanning techniques. The surrounding Vézère valley contains multiple other decorated caves, most notably the Font-de-Gaume with its original polychrome bison.
