A low granite mountain range forming the western edge of the Rhine plain, with rounded summits called chaumes above mixed fir and beech forests. The Route des Crêtes along the crest ridge provides panoramic views east across the Alsace plain, the Rhine, and the Black Forest in Germany. The southern Vosges are notable for glacial cirque lakes including the Lac Blanc and Lac Noir near Col du Bonhomme.
