A small Norman city that survived the 1944 Liberation largely intact, preserving a complete medieval street plan around its Gothic cathedral. The Bayeux Tapestry — a 70-metre embroidered linen narrative of the Norman Conquest of England, dating to the eleventh century — is displayed in a purpose-built museum at near eye-level. The city also serves as a natural base for visiting the D-Day landing beaches along the nearby Calvados coast.
