One of the so-called Cathar castles of the Corbières hills, Peyrepertuse occupies a narrow rocky ridge at over 800 metres, its ruined walls following the natural profile of the crest for nearly three hundred metres. The fortress comprises two separate defensive systems from different medieval periods, joined by a steep internal staircase. The surrounding limestone garrigues and views toward the Pyrenees and Mediterranean make this one of the most dramatically sited medieval ruins in France.
