A seaside resort town on the sheltered Arcachon Bay, famous for its oyster farms, nineteenth-century villas in the Ville d'Hiver quarter, and proximity to the Dune du Pilat. The bay's tidal rhythms sustain one of France's most productive oyster-cultivation areas, with tasting shacks accessible directly at the farming ports of the Bassin. Belle-époque architecture in the Ville d'Hiver hillside district survives in an unusually complete state.
