Killary Harbour is a narrow glacial fjord extending roughly 16 kilometres between the mountains of Mweelrea in Mayo and the Maumturk Mountains in Galway, forming Ireland's only glacially formed fjord. Its still dark waters, rarely disturbed by wind due to the steep flanking hillsides, support mussel aquaculture longlines that are visible from the N59 road skirting the southern shore. The fjord's head near Leenane provides one of the most enclosed and dramatic water views in the west of Ireland.
