Old Town Alexandria is the historic core of Alexandria, Virginia, a colonial river port on the Potomac just downstream of Washington. Founded in the mid-eighteenth century, it retains a large concentration of surviving early buildings, its grid of brick sidewalks lined with Georgian and Federal townhouses, taverns and warehouses. The main street runs down to a working waterfront with piers and a former torpedo factory now filled with art studios.
