Vanha Rauma, the Old Rauma district, is the largest unified wooden town in the Nordic countries and a World Heritage Site. Its irregular medieval street plan is filled with hundreds of low painted wooden houses, most from the 18th and 19th centuries after fires, yet following far older property lines. Rauma was long famous for bobbin lace-making, a craft still celebrated in its shops and annual lace week. Two medieval churches and the old town hall anchor the quarter, and visitors wander the colourful lanes admiring carved doors and gates.
