The Quadrilatero della Moda, also called the Quadrilatero d'Oro, is a compact historic quarter in central Milan bounded by four elegant streets. Long before it became a famous fashion district, the area was a residential enclave of noble palazzi with discreet courtyards and gardens behind sober façades. Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga follow the lines of old Roman and medieval routes. Today the ground floors hold luxury boutiques, but the upper storeys and hidden interiors preserve centuries of aristocratic architecture.
