Blankenese is a former fishing village on the slopes above the Elbe, now one of Hamburg's most atmospheric historic districts. Its defining feature is the Treppenviertel, a maze of steep staircases and terraced lanes climbing the hillside with no through-roads for cars. Captains' villas and whitewashed cottages cling to the incline, offering wide views over the shipping lanes below. The quarter grew from a maritime community into a prosperous riverside retreat, and visitors still navigate it on foot along stairways linking small squares.
