The Sunsphere is a steel truss tower topped by a golden glass sphere in downtown Knoxville, built for the 1982 World's Fair, whose theme celebrated energy. Rising about 81 metres, the gold-mirrored ball houses an observation deck open to the public, giving views over the fair site, the Tennessee River and the surrounding ridges. The structure survived the closure of the fairgrounds and was later restored as a city landmark within a public park. Its glinting orb has become a symbol of Knoxville along the river.
