The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière sits atop the Fourvière hill overlooking Lyon, completed in the late nineteenth century in an ornate blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles. Its northern tower can be climbed on guided visits, opening onto a panorama that on clear days stretches from the confluence of the Rhône and Saône to the distant Alps and Mont Blanc. The interior glitters with mosaics, marble and gilding, and the esplanade is one of the finest viewpoints over the red rooftops of the old city.
