Piazza dei Miracoli, formally the Piazza del Duomo, is the walled cathedral square of Pisa and a UNESCO World Heritage site set on a broad lawn. It gathers four medieval marble monuments: the striped cathedral, the round baptistery, the Camposanto burial cloister and the celebrated leaning bell tower. The green sward that surrounds them, unusual for an Italian city centre, sets off the white stone dramatically. Visitors climb the tilting campanile for views over the terracotta roofs and pose along the perimeter walls.
