The Marktplatz of Bremen is one of the best-preserved public squares in northern Germany, bordered by the Gothic-Renaissance town hall and the great stone statue of Roland, both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The knight Roland, raised in 1404, symbolises the city's civic freedoms, while nearby stands the bronze group of the Town Musicians of Bremen. The cathedral of St Peter and gabled guild houses complete the ensemble, and the square remains the setting for markets and the city's traditional festivals.
