Place de la Comédie is the vast central square of Montpellier, an egg-shaped expanse of pale stone that has been the city's living room since the 18th century. At its northern end stands the ornate opera house, and the Three Graces fountain rises at its centre. Cafés under broad awnings line the edges, and the square opens onto the shaded Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle. Trams glide along one flank, and street performers and markets keep it busy from morning until late into the warm southern evening.
