Founded in 1905 by the industrialist and reformer Zhang Jian, this Nantong institution is often cited as the first museum established by a Chinese national rather than a foreign body. Its gardens and pavilions on the bank of the Haohe River hold natural history, art and historical collections gathered in the reformist spirit of the late Qing. Fossils, ceramics and objects related to Zhang's model industrial city fill the halls. The garden museum's early date gives it a special place in the history of Chinese museology.
