The original shrine at Tepeyac, built in the early eighteenth century, is one of the most visited pilgrimage churches in the world and the historic home of the venerated image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Its baroque facade and tiled dome now lean noticeably because the soft lakebed soil beneath the city has caused the structure to sink over time. Beside the vast modern basilica, the older building remains open for prayer and forms part of a complex of chapels climbing the hillside where the apparitions are said to have occurred.
