In Huntsville, north of Houston, this museum complex preserves the home, law office, and grave of Sam Houston, the general and statesman who led Texas to independence and served as president of the republic and later governor. Original structures, including his Steamboat House and a dogtrot cabin, stand on the grounds amid interpretive exhibits on his life and the Texas Revolution. A separate gallery displays personal belongings, documents, and Native American artifacts he collected.
