In the small eastern Colorado town of Burlington, this rare antique carousel, built in 1905, is one of the few surviving hand-carved wooden merry-go-rounds still operating with its original paint and menagerie of animals. Housed in a purpose-built pavilion at the county fairgrounds, it features intricately carved horses, giraffes, and other creatures and a working band organ. A National Historic Landmark, it is prized for the survival of its original artwork, which most such carousels lost to repainting.
