The state history museum in Tallahassee gathers the long story of Florida under one roof, from Ice Age mammals and Indigenous cultures to Spanish colonization, statehood, and the twentieth century. Its signature exhibit is the skeleton of a giant mastodon recovered from a local sinkhole, alongside a reconstructed Spanish galleon and treasure recovered from sunken fleets. Galleries trace the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, citrus and tourism industries, and the space age.
